How to perform it
For strength, 3 to 5 sets of 3 to 5 reps with 3 to 5 minutes of rest are common. For hypertrophy, use 3 to 4 sets of 6 to 12 reps with 2 to 3 minutes of rest.
Execution and technique cues
- Stand at the take-off line with a hip-width stance, hinge at the hips and bend the knees into a shallow squat, and swing the arms back to load the stretch reflex.
- Extend the hips, knees, and ankles explosively while driving the arms forward and upward simultaneously to maximize horizontal impulse.
- Aim for an approximately 45-degree takeoff angle to balance height and distance, keeping the gaze slightly forward and downward.
- Land on both feet simultaneously, absorb the impact through controlled dorsiflexion, knee flexion, and hip flexion, and hold the landing position stable before moving.
Common mistakes
- Too vertical a takeoff angle: Jumping too steeply generates height instead of distance. The center of mass should travel on a low, flat arc forward.
- Neglecting the arm swing: Failing to coordinate the arm drive with the leg extension significantly reduces the total impulse produced, limiting jump distance.
- Stiff landing: Landing with straight or nearly straight legs transfers excessive impact forces to the joints and spine instead of absorbing them through the muscles.
Frequently asked questions
- How is performance measured in the Broad Jump?
- Distance is measured horizontally from the takeoff line to the heel of the rearmost foot at landing, typically in centimetres or metres. The best of two or three attempts is usually recorded.
- Can the Broad Jump be used as a warm-up exercise?
- Yes, submaximal broad jumps are effective for neuromuscular activation before strength or speed sessions. Perform them after general movement prep and gradually increase intensity across a few jumps before going all out.
