Which muscles does it train?
Calves

How to perform it
Isolation work is usually trained in a higher rep range: 2 to 4 sets of 10 to 15 reps with 45 to 90 seconds of rest, performed under control.
Execution and technique cues
- Place the balls of your feet on the footplate with the heels hanging freely. Hinge the torso forward so it is nearly horizontal and the machine loads the weight through the hips and lower back.
- Lower the heels as far as possible until you feel a deep stretch in the calf, and hold briefly at the bottom.
- Drive the heels upward explosively to full plantar flexion, squeezing the calf muscles hard at the top of the movement.
- Return slowly and under control to the stretched position without bouncing or using momentum.
Common mistakes
- Using too short a range of motion by not lowering the heels fully or not reaching full plantar flexion at the top, which significantly reduces the stimulus for the gastrocnemius.
- Using momentum to bounce through reps instead of controlling the movement. Slow, deliberate tempo is essential for effective calf training.
- Allowing the feet to rotate inward or outward or slip on the footplate, which shifts the load and increases injury risk. Keep the feet in a neutral, parallel position.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the advantage of the Donkey Calf Raise over a standing calf raise?
- The forward torso angle in the Donkey Calf Raise places the gastrocnemius under a greater stretch compared to an upright standing position. This increased range of motion and stretch is considered beneficial for gastrocnemius hypertrophy.
- What foot position should I use?
- A neutral, parallel stance is the standard starting point. Turning the toes slightly outward shifts more emphasis to the medial gastrocnemius head, while turning them inward shifts emphasis to the lateral head. Use a parallel stance for balanced overall calf development.
