How to perform it
For strength, 3 to 5 sets of 4 to 6 reps with 2 to 3 minutes of rest are common. For hypertrophy, use 3 to 4 sets of 6 to 12 reps with 90 to 120 seconds of rest.
Execution and technique cues
- Secure the weight plates on the dip belt or hold a dumbbell securely between your feet, then hang from the bar with a slightly wider than shoulder-width grip.
- Depress and retract your shoulder blades to initiate the movement, engaging the lats before bending your elbows.
- Pull your chest toward the bar by driving your elbows down and back, keeping your core tight and avoiding excessive leg swing.
- Clear the bar with your chin under control, squeeze the back muscles, and lower yourself slowly back to a full dead hang.
Common mistakes
- Using body momentum or kicking the legs to swing the added weight upward instead of pulling with the back.
- Cutting the range of motion short at the bottom by failing to reach a full hang before starting the next rep.
- Letting the shoulders roll forward and cave in at the top of the movement, which shifts tension off the lats.
Frequently asked questions
- Should I use a dip belt or a dumbbell between my feet for weighted pull-ups?
- A dip belt is generally preferred for heavier loads as it keeps the weight centered and allows you to focus fully on execution, whereas holding a dumbbell between your feet is suitable for lighter weights.
- How does the extra weight affect my shoulder safety during pull-ups?
- The added load increases stress on the shoulder joint, making it critical to avoid dropping quickly into a dead hang and instead maintain active shoulder engagement throughout the entire range of motion.
