How to perform it
For strength, 3 to 5 sets of 3 to 6 reps with 2 to 3 minutes of rest are common. For hypertrophy, use 3 to 4 sets of 8 to 12 reps with 60 to 120 seconds of rest.
Execution and technique cues
- Sit upright with the bench reclined to about 80 degrees, hold the dumbbells at shoulder height with palms facing you and elbows close together in front of your body.
- Press the dumbbells upward while simultaneously rotating your wrists outward so that by the top of the press your palms face away from you.
- Extend the arms to near lockout at the top, keeping the dumbbells roughly shoulder-width apart so the deltoids stay under tension.
- Reverse the arc back to the start under control, rotating the palms back toward you as the elbows return to shoulder height in front of the body.
Common mistakes
- Performing the palm rotation all at once at the bottom or top instead of spreading it evenly throughout the entire range of motion.
- Arching the lower back excessively to press heavier load, which shifts stress onto the lumbar spine and away from the shoulder complex.
- Flaring the elbows too wide at the bottom, which reduces the range of motion and removes the unique recruitment advantage of the movement.
Frequently asked questions
- What makes the Arnold Press different from a standard dumbbell shoulder press?
- The Arnold Press starts with palms facing you and elbows forward, then rotates through the press so palms face away at the top. This arc recruits all three deltoid heads across a longer range of motion compared to a fixed-grip overhead press.
- Should I use the same weight as my regular dumbbell press?
- No. The rotation adds a stabilization demand that reduces how much load you can handle. Start notably lighter than your standard shoulder press weight and prioritize a smooth, consistent rotation before increasing load.
