How to perform it
Isolation work is usually trained in a higher rep range: 2 to 4 sets of 10 to 15 reps with 45 to 90 seconds of rest, performed under control.
Execution and technique cues
- Stand sideways next to an upright or cable post and grip it with your free hand, letting the body tilt slightly outward away from the support.
- Hold the dumbbell in the outer hand with a slight elbow bend, arm hanging in front of the hip with the thumb angled slightly downward.
- Raise the arm laterally to shoulder height, initiating the movement from the deltoid and keeping the trap relaxed throughout.
- Lower the dumbbell under control, using the inclined body position to achieve a strong stretch on the deltoid at the bottom of every rep.
Common mistakes
- Shrugging the shoulder upward during the raise, which shifts the load onto the trapezius and reduces deltoid tension.
- Bending the elbow excessively, which shortens the lever arm and decreases the mechanical demand on the lateral deltoid.
- Using momentum to swing the weight up instead of lifting it under muscular control, robbing the deltoid of time under tension.
Frequently asked questions
- Why is the Egyptian lateral raise considered superior to the standard lateral raise?
- The lateral body tilt shifts the load so the deltoid remains under tension at the bottom of the range of motion. In a standard lateral raise, tension is near zero when the arm hangs straight down because the dumbbell is directly below the shoulder joint.
- How much weight should I use compared to a standard lateral raise?
- Most lifters need to reduce the load by 20 to 40 percent compared to their standard lateral raise because the stretched position at the bottom is significantly more demanding. Start lighter than you expect and prioritize a full, controlled range of motion.
