Quadriceps
Equipment needed
How to perform it
Isolation work is usually trained in a higher rep range: 2 to 4 sets of 10 to 15 reps with 45 to 90 seconds of rest, performed under control.
Execution and technique cues
- Sit back in the machine, press your hips flat against the backrest, and pull yourself down using the handles.
- Align your knees with the pivot point of the machine and place the pad just above your ankles.
- Extend your legs fully, squeezing your quadriceps at the top of the movement.
- Lower the pad under control back to the starting position without letting the weights slam.
Common mistakes
- Allowing the hips or buttocks to rise off the seat during the extension.
- Using swinging momentum to kick the pad up rather than a controlled muscular contraction.
- Placing the leg pad too high on the shins or too low on the toes.
Frequently asked questions
- Should I point my toes in or out?
- Keep your toes pointed straight up for balanced quad development. Tilting them excessively can place uneven stress on the knees.
- Is the leg extension bad for the knees?
- No, when performed with controlled weight and proper alignment, it is a safe exercise that isolates the quadriceps.
