How to perform it
Isolation work is usually trained in a higher rep range: 2 to 4 sets of 10 to 15 reps with 45 to 90 seconds of rest, performed under control.
Execution and technique cues
- Place two weight plates smooth-side out and pinch them together with your fingers on one side and your thumb on the other.
- Stand tall, pull your shoulders back and down, and lift the plates off the ground with a straight arm.
- Hold the plates securely, keeping a tight grip and maintaining a neutral spine throughout the duration of the set.
- Lower the plates carefully back to the floor under control once the target duration is reached.
Common mistakes
- The lifter allows the plates to slide apart by relaxing the grip before the set is completed.
- The shoulders round forward and the chest collapses during the hold.
- The elbow of the working arm bends instead of remaining fully extended.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I use a single bumper plate instead of two metal plates?
- Yes, using a single thick bumper plate is a viable option if you do not have two plates with smooth sides to pinch together.
- How does the plate pinch benefit my overall lifting performance?
- It builds specific pinch grip strength in the fingers and thumbs, which directly improves performance in deadlifts and carries.
