How to perform it
Time under tension matters more than load here: 3 to 4 sets of 8 to 15 reps, or holds of 20 to 60 seconds, with 45 to 90 seconds of rest.
Execution and technique cues
- Kneel in front of a cable machine with a rope attachment set at the highest pulley position, grasp both ends of the rope beside the head, and keep the hands at the temples throughout the set.
- Hinge slightly forward at the hip so the torso forms roughly a 45-degree angle with the floor and hold this hip position fixed for the entire set.
- Flex the thoracic spine by curling the ribs toward the pelvis until a peak contraction of the rectus abdominis is felt, and hold briefly at the bottom.
- Return under control to the starting angle without opening the hips or extending the spine, keeping tension in the cable throughout.
Common mistakes
- Opening the hips during the movement: Extending at the hip instead of flexing the spine recruits the hip flexors rather than the abs and removes the target stimulus.
- Pulling with the hands instead of letting them ride with the head: Using the arms to drag the rope down shifts work away from the abs and into the shoulders and arms.
- Using too much weight: Excessive load forces the lifter to swing the entire torso rather than segmentally flex the spine, which eliminates most abdominal stimulus.
Frequently asked questions
- Why is the cable crunch more effective than an unweighted crunch?
- The cable provides constant tension throughout the full range of motion, whereas bodyweight crunches have near-zero load at the top of the movement. The cable also allows progressive overload by increasing the weight stack.
- How far down should I crunch?
- Crunch until you feel a maximal contraction of the rectus abdominis. For most people this means the elbows approach or lightly contact the thighs. The exact end range varies with individual proportions.
