How to perform it
For strength, 3 to 5 sets of 3 to 6 reps with 2 to 3 minutes of rest are common. For hypertrophy, use 3 to 4 sets of 8 to 12 reps with 60 to 120 seconds of rest.
Execution and technique cues
- Adjust the seat height so the handles are aligned with your shoulders or upper chest and press your feet into the floor.
- Sit back against the pad, grab the handles with a firm grip, and pull your shoulders down and back.
- Press the handles directly overhead by extending the arms, keeping your chest up and upper back against the seat.
- Lower the weight under control until your hands are back near shoulder level, maintaining tension in the shoulders.
Common mistakes
- Arching the lower back excessively and sliding the hips forward on the seat to press at an angle.
- Letting the elbows flare out too wide to the sides, which can place undue stress on the shoulder joints.
- Pressing with an incomplete range of motion, stopping before the arms are fully extended or failing to lower the weight enough.
Frequently asked questions
- What handles should I use if the machine has multiple grip options?
- A neutral grip (palms facing each other) is generally friendlier on the shoulder joints, while a pronated grip (palms facing forward) targets the anterior deltoids more directly.
- How low should I bring the handles on the descent?
- Lower the handles until they are roughly at chin or shoulder height, depending on your shoulder mobility, without feeling discomfort.
