How to perform it
For strength, 3 to 5 sets of 3 to 6 reps with 2 to 3 minutes of rest are common. For hypertrophy, use 3 to 4 sets of 8 to 12 reps with 60 to 120 seconds of rest.
Execution and technique cues
- Set up with a wide grip on the barbell, lower your hips, and keep your chest up and back flat.
- Push through the floor, keeping the bar close to your shins and sweeping it back toward your hips.
- Extend your hips and knees explosively, shrug, and pull the bar overhead with active elbows.
- Catch the bar overhead with locked arms in a partial squat, stand up fully, and lower the bar under control.
Common mistakes
- The arms bend early in the pull, which loses the power generated by the lower body.
- The barbell loops outward away from the body during the third pull.
- The barbell is caught with soft or unlocked elbows, risking shoulder instability.
Frequently asked questions
- How wide should my grip be for a power snatch?
- Your grip should be wide enough so that the barbell rests in the crease of your hips when standing tall.
- Can I perform power snatches as a beginner?
- Yes, but it is best to start with a PVC pipe or a light technique bar to learn the movement mechanics safely.
