How to perform it
For strength, use 3 to 5 heavy carries over 10 to 20 meters with 2 to 3 minutes of rest. For conditioning and volume, use 3 to 4 carries over 30 to 50 meters at a moderate load.
Execution and technique cues
- Stand tall with feet shoulder-width apart, holding a weight in each hand at shoulder height with arms fully extended and parallel to the floor.
- Pull the shoulder blades slightly together and down to stabilize the shoulder joints and prevent them from rolling forward.
- Keep the gaze forward and maintain even tension through the core and glutes, holding the arms precisely at shoulder height.
- Continue breathing steadily and resist the urge to lower the arms or shrug the shoulders until the target time is reached.
Common mistakes
- Allowing the arms to drift below shoulder height as the deltoids fatigue, significantly reducing the training stimulus.
- Shrugging the shoulders up toward the ears instead of actively depressing and retracting the shoulder blades.
- Compensating with spinal extension or lateral lean rather than maintaining a neutral, braced torso throughout the hold.
Frequently asked questions
- How heavy should the weights be for the Crucifix Hold?
- Start very conservatively, for example 2 to 5 kg per hand. The lever arm created by straight arms is extreme, so even light weights become very challenging quickly. Choose a load that allows you to maintain correct form for the full duration.
- How long should I hold the Crucifix Hold?
- 20 to 30 seconds per set is a practical starting point for beginners. More advanced athletes can progressively extend the hold to 60 seconds or more before increasing the load.
