How to perform it
For strength, 3 to 5 sets of 3 to 6 reps with 2 to 4 minutes of rest are common. For hypertrophy, use 3 to 4 sets of 6 to 12 reps with 60 to 120 seconds of rest.
Execution and technique cues
- Adjust the seat height so the handles align with your mid-to-lower chest, sit tall, and plant your feet firmly.
- Grip the handles, pull your shoulder blades down and back, and press your upper back into the backrest.
- Press the handles forward smoothly until your elbows are extended, keeping the shoulders back.
- Control the weight back to the starting position, allowing a deep stretch in the chest without letting the weight stack touch.
Common mistakes
- Letting the shoulders roll forward off the backrest during the press, which shifts the tension onto the anterior deltoids.
- Letting the elbows flare up towards the ears instead of keeping them tucked at a 45-degree angle.
- Using momentum or bouncing the weight off the starting position instead of executing controlled movements.
Frequently asked questions
- How does a Plate-Loaded Chest Press differ from a standard Barbell Bench Press?
- The machine provides a fixed path of motion and reduces the need for stabilizer muscles, allowing you to focus purely on chest muscle fatigue.
- Should I lock out my elbows at the top of the press?
- You can extend your arms fully, but avoid aggressively locking out or hyperextending the elbows to maintain tension on the chest muscles.
